The Department of Physics at New Mexico State University has been
sponsoring a physics competition every year for almost a decade.
The Physics Olympics is an enjoyable day of physics-based team competicions
which challenges students to apply concepts they have learnee in
class to actual situations. Students are also provided with an opportunity
to visit our Department, meet with Faculty and current students,
and to learn of the opportunities available to those interested
in our degree programs.
The competition is a day long event that is comprised of several
events. In the past these have included such things as water dragsters
and egg drops. This year we had five events: 1.Fermi Questions 2.
Paper Gliders 3. Water Launcher 4. Open Event and 5. Physics Jeopardy.
The open event was announced the day of the competition and therefore
involved limited preparation. This year a standing wave was set
up between two speakers and a frequency was dialed in with a function
generator. The students had to walk into the field, measure the
interferrence nodes, and report back the frequency that dialed in
for that team.
The Department of Physics at New Mexico State had a wonderful time
hosting thie year's field of competitors and we would like to thank
them for their participation. If anyone has any questions please
feel free to contact me via the webmaster e-mail link below.
