William Gibbs

Dr. Gibbs is engaged in research in the hadronic interaction, which deals with the strongest of the forces known. It binds nuclei and holds many basic particles together. His studies explore the connections of the presumed underlying theory, Quantum Chromo Dynamics, with the forces that are observed in nature to moderate the interactions among neutrons, protons, pions etc. The structure of strongly interacting systems is normally secondary in this work, the major thrust involving reactions in which these particles (and composites of them, such as nuclei) undergo various interactions and transmutations. The projects undertaken in these studies often use the nucleus as a laboratory and typically involve moderately extensive computation.
